A Mayo man pleaded guilty in mid-September during his trial in county court on all of 10 counts in an animal cruelty case.

Danny Rogers Bridges had attempted to enter a plea in the case Sept. 14 before the trial began, but Lafayette County Judge Harlow Land Jr. declined to accept anything less than as charged.

According to the State Attorney's Office, Bridges had left nine horses in a pasture and Bridges failed to feed and water the animals until they became near death and in fact, two of the horses did die. Those two dead horses were left to be devoured by birds or beast, contrary to Florida law, the state charged.

After the trial began, Bridges decided to plead guilty on all counts. Those counts include one charge of confinement of animals without sufficient food, water or exercise, seven counts of cruelty to animals and two counts of improper disposal of bodies of dead animals, according to the charging document filed in Lafayette County.

Bridges, 66, was adjudicated guilty of all 10 counts and sentenced to one year probation on all counts to run concurrently (together) and ordered to pay $2,500 in fines and court costs. Judge Land also ordered as special conditions of Bridges probation that he reimburse the county $350 for the cost of calling the jury, ordered that he not own or care for any horses while on probation and that all the surviving horses are to be picked up and sold by the sheriff within 10 days of the order to satisfy the lien or Bridges is to pay boarding fees to the sheriff.

Assistant State Attorney Skip Jarvis prosecuted the case while Lake City attorney Ron Peacock represented Bridges.
