A 50-year-old man was arrested at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the 900 block of Douglas Circle and charged with cruelty to animals.

Witnesses told police they heard a dog yelp and saw the suspect screaming at the dog and hitting it with a stick.
A police officer said the suspect appeared to be very intoxicated when he admitted that he beat the dog, adding, "and I hope the dog dies."

The man was chasing the dog with a stick, then picked up a shovel and beat the dog until it dropped to the ground, according to a police report. The man continued to beat the dog with a shovel as it lay on the ground unable to move. Police said the dog "appeared lifeless" but they were unsure if the dog was dead when it was picked up by Animal Control.
