A car wash in the South Bay is offering a reward for the identification of a man who deliberately ran over and killed 10 of the ducks that have been an attraction at the business for years.

A grainy surveillance tape at the Delta Queen Classic Car Wash -- a theme wash shaped like a Mississippi riverboat -- shows a man in his late teens or early 20s driving through the parking lot three or four times, aiming for the animals and running them down.

Its sickening, said Chris Foley, a manager at the business, popular for its duck pond and gift shop and located at 981 E. Hamilton Ave. in Campbell.

The incident happened about 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 5 and at first was kept quiet by managers who hoped the driver would return so they could catch him.

Many of the ducks are descendants of a pair named Cheese and Quackers, a gift to the car wash owners from a customer in 1972. About 15 remained after last Fridays rampage.

Foley said employees turned to the surveillance video after he noticed the dead ducks in the parking lot when he arrived at work. At first, he suspected a careless garbage truck driver, but looking at the tape, he saw that the birds were dead when the garbage truck pulled in that morning.

Rewinding the tape further, he discovered the killer driving a red, two-door Acura Integra with what looked to be a vanity license plate and a parking sticker in the back window. The film is too blurry to make out the plate, so the car wash is asking for the publics help in identifying the driver.

The car wash is offering a $200 reward for information in the attack, which also is being investigated by Campbell police. Felony animal abuse can bring up to three years in prison.

Vanessa Lopez, a cashier at the Delta Queen, said she noticed that during the fowl massacre, a woman was talking on a nearby public phone.

Foley described the film: He runs over two ducks and then goes out on the street, makes a U-turn, runs over the ducks again, goes down the lane between the back side of the wash and restaurant where a bunch of ducks are sitting and plows right through them.

The man then got out of his car and started flushing out the surviving ducks, many of them ducklings, from the bushes. He grabbed a couple and either threw them at his car or into his car, Foley said.

The first ducks to be killed were among the oldest, Foley said. They were like grandma and grandpa, he said. Over the years, the birds have become like pets, pecking at the feet of employees and following them around. Theyre like dogs, Foley said.

Campbell police Capt. Russ Patterson said there are no leads in the case so far. Were hoping that the public will be outraged by this thing, he said. Clearly it was an intentional act -- driving through and swerving back to hit the ducks sitting there.

Case Updates

The reward is up to $24,000 in the search for a motorist who savagely ran down and killed 11 ducks at Campbell's popular Delta Queen Classic Car Wash pond, a store manager said.
``Some day this person is going to get caught,'' said Mike Davis. The reward was $200 just after Aug. 5, 2005, when the bizarre massacre was discovered, but donations from around the world have pushed it into the thousands of dollars.

Delta Queen surveillance cameras captured images of a young man corralling ducks from the carwash pond after midnight, and running them over repeatedly with a red, two-door Acura Integra -- before speeding away. Grim video of the incident made television news around the globe. But the car license plate was illegible in the video, and Campbell police said no tips have panned out in identifying the killer. ``Occasionally we get a new lead,'' Capt. Russ Patterson said.

Spring brought a brace of new ducklings to the pond at 981 E. Hamilton Ave., where over three decades, the flock had grown to about two dozen. . With 15 ducks surviving the attack and six new ducklings hatched earlier this month, the flock is up to 21.
``We've set up more surveillance cameras since it all happened,'' Davis said. The flock makes its home at the pond but also travels, so there is little else to protect the ducks while still allowing them to come and go as they please. ``We'd have to put a cage around the whole place, the whole building. We can't do that,'' Davis said.
The driver would face up to a year in jail and fines if caught and convicted on felony animal abuse charges.

The reward to find the suspect who ran down 10 ducks at a Campbell carwash has grown to nearly 14-thousand dollars. Police say they have three investigators working full time on the case. Authorities say a man intentionally drove over the ducks, then got out of his car and killed some with his hands. Surveillance cameras captured the incident at about 12:30 a.m. August fifth, but the tape is not clear enough to see a license plate. Authorities are seeking the public's help

The slaughter of 10 ducks at a Campbell carwash is touching even more hearts as the reward fund to find the killer neared $10,000 Monday.

Police also set up a tip line to take calls about the killer's identity. As of Monday, no arrests had been made.

Concern and condolences are pouring in from all over: donations from Canada, e-mails from Hawaii, letters from Lake Tahoe and the Napa Valley. The reward fund probably will jump even higher after a live appearance on MSNBC Monday night by Campbell Police Capt. Russ Patterson and segments on national network TV and radio news.

``They're calling in with credit cards and money orders, it's just really growing,'' said Vanessa Lopez, a cashier at the Delta Queen Classic Car Wash on Hamilton Avenue. ``People are disgusted by what happened.''

Assistant community service officer Paul Chamberlin has been assigned to the Campbell case. He can be reached at (408) 866-2121. Rich Shipman of the Campbell Police Department said investigators had hoped to enhance the video and get a better look at the driver and the car's license plate, but the quality is too poor to work with.

The license appears to be a California vanity plate with four characters, a space, and two more characters, Patterson said.
