A Penn Acres family arrived home from a beach outing on July 24 to find their house burglarized and their 7-month-old Labrador retriever blud-geoned to death.
New Castle County police spokesman Cpl. Trinidad Navarro said the break-in occurred sometime between 1 p.m. Saturday and 1:12 a.m. Sunday, when the family returned home.
Nick Dumas-Brown knew something was amiss as soon as he arrived home. His other dog, which had been inside the house with the puppy was outside walking.
As he walked into the house, it was clear that it had been ransacked, Dumas-Brown said. Then he saw his dog, Voodoo, at the top of the stairs.
Fortunately, his two children were behind him and couldn't see the dog, he said.
"They ... viciously murdered our dog," he said in a telephone conversation.
Dumas-Brown said the family drove to New York to stay with relatives after the incident.
He said he has lived on the 100 block of Colesbery Drive for several years. He described the neighborhood as nice.
"We were so traumatized," he said. "I don't think I'm ever going to go back to that house."
"He was as cute as pie," Dumas-Brown said of his dog. "I got him seven months ago when he was a puppy."
Dumas-Brown is offering a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest.
