Puppy beaten to death
Santa Cruz, CA (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Mar 12, 2003
County: Santa Cruz

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Brock Reid Evans

A Canadian man pleaded innocent on April 3, 2003 to charges that he beat his puppy to death in a hotel room. Prosecutors allege that Brock Reid Evans, 28, of British Columbia, killed his 3-month-old puppy at the Coast Santa Cruz Hotel in the early hours of March 12.

Police believe he hit the shepherd-mix with his hands several times and threw him against the wall.

District Attorney Bob Lee said the man could face up to four years in prison on a felony animal cruelty charge.

Police went to the hotel after getting calls from other guests who heard a disturbance in the room, Sgt. Brad Goodwin said.

It appeared the man had been drinking and fighting with another man as well as beating the dog, Goodwin said.

Police found blood and other evidence in the room before reportedly finding the dog's body hidden outside the hotel, wrapped in a sheet.

The man told police it was his dog, and he could do what he wanted with it, Goodwin said.

"It's inconceivable to me that anyone could beat a puppy to death," Goodwin said.

Lee said the suspect posted $25,000 bail after the arrest, and appeared in court Thursday with his attorney, Peter Leeming.

Detective Tony Lee said Evans was uncooperative when he spoke with him in jail the next day.

Prosecutors would like to know who was in the room with Evans, and Lee asks any witnesses to call his office at 454-2400.
