Valerie L. Bogner, 32, of southern Manatee County has been charged with abandoning four kittens by the side of a road. A witness saw her dump the kittens from a box in the 5000 block of 45th Street E.

Bogner posted $370 bail about three hours after being charged with animal abandonment, a first-degree misdemeanor punishable on conviction by a year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Three of the kittens are at the county's animal shelter in Palmetto. They will be killed if no one adopts them within two weeks. The fourth kitten was never found.

Bogner, 5500 block 42nd Street E, couldn't be reached for any comments. The woman who reported Bogner dumping the kittens said she reported the incident because "there's no sense to it."

The Manatee County Animal Shelter has received about 40 calls from people who want to adopt the three kittens that were abandoned.

The release of any of the kittens will be delayed until Monday to give a veterinarian the opportunity to examine and sterilize them. The kittens will then be offered to those who contact the shelter first.
