A gray and white Tabby cat named Socks was found sawed in half early on the morning of June 27 in a quiet Spring Hill neighborhood. Area residents pledged more than $3,000 in reward money for any information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for killing Socks.

The VanNostrands originally started with $500 from their own checkbook.

Police canvassed the VanNostrands' neighborhood June 30 looking for more clues, said Deputy Donna Black, public information officer for the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. No arrests have yet been made in the case but "we're actively pursuing all leads," Black said.

Socks' body was found about 5 a.m. on June 27 morning by neighbor Simon Dalomba, according to a police report. The upper part of the feline's torso was found in Dalomba's yard, police said.

Hernando County Deputy Kimberly Burger said that saw dust from a saw blade was found around the cat's neck.

It looked like the suspect was considering cutting the feline's neck but for unknown reasons decided to cut through Socks' midsection, Burger said.

The lower half of the feline could not be located but its intestines were found a few yards away.
