City police returned to the Michael and Anna Brownfield residence at 105 Thompson St. on August 5 to assist personnel from Job and Family Services, the Tuscarawas County Humane Society and the dog warden.

The various agencies had been notified of the pest and flea infested residence after officers handled a call there on the night of August 3 that resulted in the arrests of the Brownfields on unrelated charges and also the discovery of the living conditions there.

There were just cages and cages of pets, Ptl. Todd Carr, who assisted at the scene, said. There were dogs, birds, snakes, lizards, a tarantula, and the flea infestation was unbelievable. The fleas covered the workers who went into the residence. One of them had to take a shower at the police station when he was done.

The patrolman added that a dead dog, which was not caged, was removed from the residence and will be autopsied.

Carr, who said that the animals were living in deplorable conditions, was unsure whether the rest of the animals had been removed from the house.

The Brownfields were released on their own recognizance after their initial hearings Aug 5 in Tuscarawas County Court at Uhrichsville. They appeared via closed circuit television from the county jail.

Michael Brownfield, 47, was charged with assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, and Anna Brownfield, 36, was charged with two counts of obstruction. The charges stem from incidents on Aug 3 when Brownfield attempted to hide in his residence to avoid police who wanted him in connection with two warrants.

Both pleaded not guilty to the charges and a lawyer was appointed to represent each of them. Their cases will be set for a pretrial conference.

The charges against Anna Brownfield stem from her unwillingness to reveal that her husband was at the residence and from giving false information about herself to officers.

Carr added that two children who were found at the residence during the incident Aug 3 only reside there during weekend visitation and that visitation has been temporarily suspended by the Department of Job and Family Services.
