A Uhrichsville area woman accused of letting her dog starve to death was ordered to serve 100 hours of community service after she pleaded no contest to a charge of cruelty against a companion animal in Tuscarawas County Court.

Magistrate William McLane found Loretta Vance, 26, of Crooked Creek Rd. SE guilty of the charge on August 11, 2004 and ordered her to pay a $100 fine. McLane suspended 30 days jail for two years of community control sanctions and ordered that Vance not own any more companion animals. Vance also forfeited another dog.

Tuscarawas County officials found a dead dog, still fastened by a chain to its dog box, at Vances residence in March.

County Dog Warden Karen Slough said the animal had died of starvation, and noted it weighed 18 pounds when it should have weighed 30 pounds.

A necropsy on the dog indicated it had been dead for 48 hours when found and had had no food for 72 hours prior to its death, Slough stated.
