On May 20, Scott Richmond allegedly left his four pit bulls with no food or water. Two of them died. While no charges have been filed, the Arizona Humane Society said the owner should pay the price.

Case Updates

A Phoenix man who did not provide his dogs with protection from the sun and heat earlier this year was convicted today of misdemeanor animal-neglect charges.

Kevin Richmond was convicted in Phoenix Municipal Court and could spend time in jail. Richmond left his 6-year-old dog outside with no water or shelter for several hours. The female pit bull was attached to a chain link pen by a rope approximately 3-feet-long and could not escape the blaring sun overhead. She died within hours of hyperthermia and heat stroke. The incident occurred back on May 20 at Richmonds residence near 24th Street and Broadway Road.

An Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician responded to a call indicating there were four dogs with no water or shelter. Once the EAMT arrived at the scene, she attempted to provide critical care in the field; however, the animal was already deceased. The deceased dog was seized by the AHS, and Richmond surrendered ownership of his other three dogs that were not in distress at the time of arrival. A necropsy (animal autopsy) was performed at the AHS Second Chance Animal Hospital and the deceased dogs body temperature was too high to register (more than 107 degrees Fahrenheit). Additionally, the pads on her front feet were blackened, indicating they were burned from heat exposure.

Richmond pleaded no contest. He faces a three-year probation during which he is prohibited of handling, fostering or maintaining an animal. Additionally, he has the option of serving 24 hours in jail or completing a two-day work alternative program and must perform 100 community service hours within the next three months
