Freeman Alexander Krieger, 26, of Lauderdale 46 has been charged with shooting his mother's Great Pyranees mix in the head with a shotgun when he said the dog wouldn't stop barking.
Krieger has been charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals. He was released from jail Wednesday morning on a $1,000 bond.
Although the dog suffered serious wounds to the head, it is expected to survive the ordeal.
The dog ran away after being shot. A tip led the animal control officers and Lauderdale County sheriff's deputies to a house outside the city limits on Lauderdale 46 about 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Florence-Lauderdale Animal Control Director Todd Nix, said "It's normal to discipline an animal. But, it's not normal to try and kill them." Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
