Shadow, a 7-month old female black labrador was killed by having her throat slit by an unidentified 20-year old Denver man.

Shadow died Friday evening during surgery at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital.

Thursday about 9:30 p.m. police were called to the Summer Chase Apartments in the 1300 block of South Fulton Way.

A man and his girlfriend were visiting a friend at the apartment complex. Melissa Martin, 29, a veterinary technican who lives in the complex said a neighbor told her she found a dog lying beside the dumpster. Martin was shocked when she saw Shadow.

"She was bleeeding from her neck; it was a totally open wound," she said. "I can't even describe it. (The dog) was in shock."

Martin tried to pick up Shadow, but he dog ran away. "That's when everyone got together and went looking for her."

There were about seven police officers and more than a dozen residents searching for the neighborhood for the wounded dog.

Martin said she and her friend kept looking for the dog until about 1:00 a.m., when she found Shadow hiding under a car about 50 feet from the dumpster where she had been before.

When the police came to get her, Shadow ran again, but she collapsed and Martin was able to get a leash on her.

Thirty to forty minutes into the surgery to repair Shadow's trachea, which was 50% severed, Shadow went into cardiac arrest and died.

Police said they do not know why the dog was attacked or what weapon was used.
