Authorities broke up a suspected cockfighting ring on Feb 27, arresting more than 60 people on animal cruelty charges and taking away almost 140 birds involved in the fighting. Participants tried to flee in all directions from 15552 Northlake Blvd. when officers and deputies from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office showed up, said Willie Puz, spokesman for Florida Fish and Wildlife.

Representatives from Florida Department of Children & Families also arrived to assist eight children whose parents may have been involved in the fighting.

Officials seized 137 birds and devices allegedly used in preparing the birds for fighting at the home near Apache Boulevard.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control officers took the birds and will evaluate their condition.

No one required medical attention during the raid, Puz said.

Those arrested face fines of up to $5,000 and/or up to five years in prison.
