A 19-year-old man who deputies say shot and seriously wounded a dog in Immokalee on Wednesday night was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. Enrique Javiel Midney of Roberts Ave. in Immokalee was booked into the jail and also charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle.

Arrest reports give this account: Around 11:30 p.m., Midney pulled up to a house in the 200 block of North Third Street, aimed a rifle out of the driver-side window of his truck and shot the dog.

The Rottweiler-mix dog was hit in the head and left eye while a person stood about 20 feet away.

When the dog started to cry because of the gunshot, Midney then sped off in his truck, witnesses told deputies.

Deputies found Midney heading west on West Main Street and stopped his truck. Because he had used a gun, officers had their weapons drawn for safety when they told him to get out of his truck and put his hands in the air.

Both Midney and a passenger, whose name was not available from reports, got out of the truck. Midney told deputies that he had just come from LaBelle, where he was hunting with friends and was on his way home.

Deputies found the .22-caliber rifle in the truck along with several shell casings.

Witnesses were able to identify Midney as the person who shot the dog.

The dog was given to his owner, Juan Lopez, so he could get medical treatment for the animal.
