Acting on a tip, dog warden agents raided a home Tuesday and found a dead dog, two starving dogs and a cat. The search warrant was executed shortly after 10 a.m. at a residence on N. Central Ave., Allen County Dog Warden Julie Shellhammer said.

No arrests were made and the case remained under investigation for the mistreatment and starvation of the animals. A cruelty to animals charge is a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail.

No one was home when agents arrived with the search warrant, Shellhammer said.

A Labrador retriever and a dead pitbull were found outside. A second pitbull was inside a garage. The cat was inside the house and appeared in fairly good health, Shellhammer said.

The dogs had an enclosed kennel but were left without food, Shellhammer said. Normally, a Humane Society of Allen County humane agent would handle the investigation, but since that position has been vacant for more than a month, Shellhammers office is handling complaints and investigations.

One of the two dogs that survived was 20 pounds underweight which is about 30 percent of its body weight, the county dog warden said. The second dog that survived was about 15 percent underweight or about 10 pounds down, Shellhammer said.

Shellhammer would not release information on the dead dogs weight saying that will be part of the criminal case that is being sought. The case is being reviewed by city prosecutors, she said.

Animal cruelty is a second-degree misdemeanor that carries up to 90 days in jail.
