A 29-year-old Long Beach man is behind bars for allegedly fracturing a cat's jaw after slamming the feline into a wall on Christmas Eve, authorities said. Rick Ortega was arrested at a home in the 100 block of East Louise Street on Thursday in connection with the incident, which took place at a relative's Bellflower home the night of Dec. 24, officials said.
Ortega slammed the cat, a female 2-year-old domestic shorthair named Smokey, into a wall for unspecified reasons, said Captain Aaron Reyes of the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority, whose agency investigated the incident.
Smokey suffered a fractured jaw, injured liver, damaged eye and concussion. She was treated and released.
"Cats are typically very resilient, but this little one is very lucky to be alive," Reyes said.
Ortega was booked on suspicion of animal cruelty and held in lieu of $26,000 bail. He's due for arraignment today in Bellflower Superior Court. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
