A dog shot in the head with an arrow survived, and the family wants to find whoever was responsible. Max is a little more than 1 year old. Andrew Bentz, 10, described his pet as a good dog.

"He was really tame, obedient. He was never in trouble," Andrew said.

Max was put in the family's fenced-in backyard, but somebody didn't latch the gate. Max then jumped against the gate, opening it and taking off. He was gone for four or five hours.

John Bentz's wife, Josie, later spotted Max outside the house.

"The dog was sittin' out there at the front door, and she came yellin'," John Bentz said. "We're pretty lucky the arrow didn't hit the jugular vein or the esophagus or windpipe."

If the arrow had been shot an inch either way, Max would have probably lost his life, WJW-TV in Cleveland reported Wednesday.

John Bentz said it was dark outside when Max was shot, and he believes the shooting was intentional. Max was taken to a veterinarian, who sedated him and removed the arrow. Max's wounds are healing

The family has offered a $250 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible, WJW-TV reported.
