One of two horses found severely neglected Thursday night on Harsens Island was put to sleep. St. Clair County humane law-enforcement officers found the horses, including one that was frozen to the ground, after being called by a mail carrier.

Officials would not say which of the two horses was euthanized.

Christopher Zuellig, director of the county's Humane Law Enforcement Office, said the male and female horses had been found in a field near Columbine Street and Voakes Road earlier in the day.

They had been alone for at least 18 hours.

The man who owns the horses lives in Fraser. Charges are expected to be brought against him, Zuellig said.

When officers arrived about 5:30 p.m. the male horse was frozen to the ground, with about 4 inches of ice around him.

His hind legs were frozen stiff. It took officers about two hours to get the animal off the ground and into a trailer. An island resident drove his backhoe about five miles to help officers get the horse.

The female horse also had problems, such as split, cracked and broken hooves, Zuellig said.
