Jesse R. Duenas, 34, of Vallejo brought a trailer-load of sheep, goats and calves to be auctioned off in Roseville. When he arrived, four animals were dead and two were injured. Officials of the Roseville Livestock Auction at 1401 Church St. called police, and Duenas was arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals.

Dee Dee Gunther, a spokeswoman for the Roseville Police Department, said witnesses reported the animals "were literally stacked on top of each other" when the 20-by-7-foot trailer carrying them pulled into the auction about 10:35 a.m. Jan. 8.

Two sheep and two goats were dead, Gunther said. One sheep had a broken leg, and another was on the floor of the trailer, attempting to breathe. A veterinarian was called to treat the two injured animals, which were taken to the Placer County Animal Control facility in Auburn.

Gunther said it wasn't immediately clear whether Duenas owns the animals or was transporting them for someone else.

Duenas was released from jail on $10,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 9 in Department 13 of Placer Superior Court in Auburn.
