11 Year old dog drowned with concrete tied to neck
Yorktown, NY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Sep 20, 2000
County: Westchester

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Police are looking for the person(s) who took a family's 11 year old pet and tied a piece of heavy concrete to its neck before dumping the animal into Lake Mohegan.

Owner Karen Stamatis said their dog, Spitha which means "Sparky" in Greek, was so trusting she would have followed anyone anywhere. Her husband, Nicholas Stamatis, reported the German short haired pointer missing the morning of Sept 20. He had placed the dog into its backyard pen the night before and in the monring the dog was missing.

Three days later Stamatis found his dead dog after going with other neighbors to Lake Mohegan to repair the dock. When Stamaatis looked into the water, he saw his dog underwater with a piece of rope tied around its neck. After the men pulled the dog out of the water, they found there was a large piece of concrete tied to the end of the rope around the dog's neck.

It isn't clear whether the dog escaped from the backyard pen or was abducted from the pen. Police have no leads.

Kayley Blum, manager of the Elmsford Animal Shelter, said this incident should serve as a warning to the neighborhood. She said it takes a really sick person to do that and they don't stop there. It's a huge red flag for the community.

Cruelty to animals is a felony.
