Police charged a south Augusta man, Keith Fowler, 60, of the 4300 block of Old Waynesboro Road, with cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor.

Fowler said he killed the black Laborador retriever shooting it with a .22 rifle several times because it had been bothering his garbage. This was perhaps the second time he had seen the dog and he just decided to get rid of it. Fowler shot the dog, it went down, he stood over it and shot it two or three more times and carried it off to a Seago Road and dumped it.

Sgt Wayne Pinkston said Fowler would not have been charged if the dog had been threatening or menancing Mr Fowler or anyone else.
