Jodi Schwab found her dog in the barn on Jan 6 - the dog was suffering from wounds resulting from exploded fireworks in her rectum. Schwab said she wished she had left her in the shelter. "They should have kept her. Then she wouldn't have had to go through all that pain."

Schwab had adopted Little Girl three years ago from the animal shelter, and it took her over a year to socialize the dog. In the last two years, she had begun to wag her tail at people and let them pet her.

The incident was reported to the Russell County Sheriff's Department, which handles animal control for the county.

Schwab has lived on 7 acres off Patterson Road in Fort Mitchell, Ala., for 11 years. Her property is completely fenced in, though she said Friday that her front and back gates have been opened in recent weeks.

She is reinforcing her gates, and plans to add locks to them, but she knows there's not much that could keep people from jumping the fence. Schwab lives alone with five other dogs and said she's scared now.

But she's also doing something about the crime.

Painted on a large piece of wood fastened to her gate is a new sign. It reads: "Hey you ignorant waste. Had a lot of fun torturing a helpless dog? I'm a helpless old woman -- lets play you sicko." Schwab is also offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who helps lead to the capture and conviction of the perpetrator.

"It's not people. A living, breathing human being couldn't do that," she said. "It's just something walking on two legs. If they have so little consideration for pain and suffering, they'll do it to someone's child."

Case Updates

The reward to find the people who assaulted a Fort Mitchell dog with fireworks is at least $6,500, though there are no suspects.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has added $1,000 to the reward fund, while locals have given another $500 since Monday.

Jodi Schwab, the owner of Little Girl, first offered a $1,000 reward to find the perpetrators who exploded fireworks in the dog's rectum, causing Schwab to have her euthanized.

The reward was increased to $2,200 by local donations, and then to $5,000 on Monday by the Muscogee County Humane Society.
