Louisiana State Police seized 30 pit-bulls on Dec 27 and arrested the man accused of raising the dogs to fight. Kevin Valentine, 41, 11395 Granberry St., was booked into Parish Prison on counts of dog fighting and simple cruelty to animals. Bond was set at $5,000.
Investigators were tipped by the East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control Center on Dec. 21 that a large number of pit bulls could be found at Valentine's house and were apparently being trained to fight, a State Police news release said.
Two treadmills were found in a storage shed outfitted with dog leashes, the news release said.
Investigators also found paraphernalia used to train fighting dogs, such as ropes, weights and large chains for strength training, the news release said.
The animals were taken to the Animal Control Center. Case UpdatesKevin Valentine was convicted of one felony count of aggravated animal cruelty on December 5, 2005. His three-year state prison sentence was suspended and he was granted supervised probation for 18 months. According to court records, conditions of his probation included that he not own, possess, or care for any animal of any kind, not attend any event involving animal fighting, have no involvement in illegal animal activity by phone, mail, or on-line (specifically www.gamingdogs.com), obtain a mental health evaluation, and remain arrest-free.
On May 17, 2006, Valentine violated his probation by picking up his third dog-fighting case, also in East Baton Rouge. (Valentines first dog-fighting arrest occurred in January 2004, in Hancock County, Mississippi). On August 31, 2006, the defendant was found to be in violation of his probation. The original sentence of three years in state prison at hard labor was imposed, and Valentine was remanded into custody to begin serving his sentence. The latest charges, resulting from his May 17, 2006 arrest, are still pending in East Baton Rouge Court. | Source: Case # 01-05-0652 Update posted on Feb 11, 2007 - 2:41PM |
