Plymouth County Deputies searched the property of Bonita Dow on Tuesday, seizing nearly 90 animals after receiving an anonymous tip. Dow owns a small acreage near Akron, Iowa. Officers immediately confiscated all the animals on the property after an inspection and recommendation by a vet.

Now more than half of the animals are being cared for at the Siouxland Humane Society. Workers say the house had been abandoned years ago and most of the animals kept there were being held in kennels or cages that were too small for them.

Authorities say the animals also weren't being properly fed, watered and were up to their elbows in filth.

Jerry Dominicak, of the Siouxland Humane Society said, "What the animals were being fed is what they were living on. It had built up on the bottom of their cages and kennels and the only place they had to eat, sleep, live and try to walk around was on their own feces."

The Plymouth County Attorney's Office has not decided yet whether to file negligence charges against Dow. They're waiting to get back written reports from veterinarians caring for the animals.

Forty dogs, 16 cats, 14 chickens, seven ducks, four goats, two donkeys, two macaques which are short-tailed monkeys, a rabbit and a potbellied pig were taken from her property.

Bonita Dow, of Sioux City, pleaded guilty Tuesday, of 12 counts of animal neglect. Several agencies, including the Siouxland Humane Society, were called to Dow's property, where they seized nearly 90 animals that they say had been inadequately cared for.

Although authorities found nine dead dogs and two dead rabbits, the exact number of dead animals could not be determined. A burn barrel was also found containing animal carcasses.

Although animal neglect is a simple misdemeanor, officials at the Siouxland Humane Society hope Dow's sentencing will bring her some help.

Jerry Dominicak, the Executive Director of the Siouxland Humane Society, said, "We really think that she needs to go through some counceling. Animal hording or collecting is a problem. This problem does need to be dealt with, and we think some counceling will help with that."

Dow's sentencing is set for November 28, 2005.

Tuesday, a judge in Plymouth County ruled that Bonita Dow did not provide proper care for all 88 animals seized, and turned custody over to the Plymouth County Sheriff's department.
