Police believe Freddie Desaussure, 20, beat the 18-pound cockapoo. He was arrested after witnesses said he used a club to rain blows on the dog, breaking the cockapoo's skull and nose.

Desaussure has been charged with cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony that carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.

Dan Evers, the vet treating the cockapoo, said the animal's right eye is so damaged it may have to be removed. Evers also fears it may have lasting brain damage because of the beating.

The cockapoo's case was described by Florence Thuot, head of the non-profit Journeys End Animal Sanctuary, as "the worse I've seen."

Dessaussure could not be reached for comment. He has been released on $1,500 bail from Volusia County Branch Jail. He told the owner he hit the dog with a rake because it was rummaging in his garbage, according to police reports.
