Two Monclova Township men have been charged with misdemeanors in connection with the stabbing and death of a neigborhood Laborador retriever in May.

Dale Beck, 49, of 7041 Heathwyck Rd, was charged with injurng an animal. He is accused of stabbing the dog with an ice pick-like instrument and a knife, according to John Arnsby, the Maumee prosecutor.

James Fahrer, 61, of 7029 Heathwyck, was charged with complicity in the injuring of an animal. He is accused of supplying the knife and the ice pick-like instrument.

The offences are second degree misdemeanors, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $750 time.

The dog, a 2-1/2 year old chocolate colored female named Hershey belonged the family of Sam Maluso, 7018 Heathwyck. It escaped from the family's fenced in yard and wandered into Mr Fahrer's yard about 5:30 p.m. May 30.

Kevin Warner, the Toledo Humane Society's cruelty investigator, said the dog jumped into a wading pool with Mr Fahrer's young granddaughter but was playful, not threatening.

He said Mr Fahrer and Mr Beck leased it with a rope when it left the pool and kept it confined.

He said Mr Beck stabbed the dog in the side, breaking off the shaft of the pick, which later was found during necropsy.

Mr Beck then stabbed the dog in the neck with a knife, the investigator said.

The cause of death was brain swelling caused by the stress, the investigator said. To obtain convictions, Mr Warner said, he needs only prove that the men injured the dog. Arraignment of the men is scheduled for July 19 in Maumee Municipal Court.
