A self-professed pest control expert led police on a search through a semi-rural neighborhood after he reportedly shot and killed two small animals, alarming his neighbors.
Officers responding to a 911 call at 9:19 a.m. in the 5100 block of Laurel Drive learned they were looking for Richard Harrell, 48, who according to residents had claimed to have booby-trapped his property, Concord police Sergeant Bud Wasson said.
Police notified teachers at nearby Ayers Elementary School and asked them to keep students inside.
After about an hour, officers arrested Harrell near his house and found a .22-caliber rifle along with a dead skunk and a dead raccoon.
``He said it was routine pest control, he said he works for a pest control business,'' Wasson said.
Harrell was cited for misdemeanor negligent discharge of a firearm and misdemeanor cruelty to animals. Officers searched his back yard but did not enter his house. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
