A bad smell has led investigators to a home and the discovery of dozens of dead and dying animals. Neighbors living in Clarkdale in the Verde Valley first noticed the pungent smell on July 29, 2004.

Police responded to an abandoned home where they found three dozen animals. Inside the home, dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, rats, lizards, snakes, some living, some dead.

A Clarkdale animal control officer says the smell inside the home from ammonia and fecal matter was horrendous.

The couple who lived there disappeared and haven't been seen in over a week. Animal control says they'll be facing felony animal abuse charges.

The three charges are Class Six felonies.

The Segrettis were arrested after police found dozens of dead or dying animals inside their Clarkdale residence. The Segrettis originally plead not guilty to 12 counts each of cruelty to animals.
