A Nov. 10 trial has been scheduled for a Golden Gate Estates woman who is accused of killing her neighbor's pet chihuahua with a shotgun.
State prosecutors have charged Wanda C. Ziglar, 49, of 4525 S.E. 4th Ave., with intentional cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Prosecutors accuse Ziglar, a clerk with the Collier County Tax Collector's Office, of gunning down her neighbor's pet the evening of July 31.
Her attorney, Donald Day, has filed a written plea of not guilty in Ziglar's behalf and filed a demand for a trial.
Collier Circuit Judge Cynthia Ellis obliged by scheduling a trial for Ziglar in November.
According to case files:
The dog owner, Marisol Olegnichar, said in a sworn statement that Ziglar had threatened before to shoot her dog or her children if they went onto her property.
At 8 p.m. July 31, deputies were sent to Ziglar's house to check out reports that a dog had been shot on the property.
Ziglar told deputies that the small dog came into her yard and she grabbed her single-shot shotgun and fired two warning shots to scare the dog away.
Ziglar said that a short time later, she went outside and saw that the dog was still there.
"She then shot the chihuahua with her shotgun and threw the dog across the street into the dirt," sheriff's reports state.
Olegnichar pleaded for help.
"Please help stop this. She killed my dog. She said it, and she did it. What is next?" the pet owner said in a sworn statement.
Ziglar was charged with intentional cruelty to animals and booked into the Collier County Jail.
She was later released after paying $2,500 bail.
