Authorities say an Evergreen man shot his dog in the head last week, and then left the dog to suffer as it ran around their neighborhood bleeding.

Patrick Moran, 51, faces felony charges of aggravated cruelty to animals. The case has been turned over to an investigator with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The dog, Morgan, survived the gunshot and was taken to the Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital.

Investigators haven't interviewed Moran yet because they can't locate him.

According to a police report, Moran used a shotgun to shoot the dog Oct. 2 inside a residence at 30762 Hilltop Drive. The dog ran outside and concerned neighbors began searching for the animal.

They eventually found the dog and turned her over to animal control officers late on Oct. 2. The dog was bleeding from its head.

Sheriff's deputies investigated the next morning. They discovered blood inside the home where Moran had been staying. They also found a hole near the home that appeared to be a grave for the dog.

Glenda Willis, a woman who was staying at the residence, told deputies that the dog had defecated all over the home, and that there was blood in the stools. Willis said in the police report that she did not witness the shooting.

The dog was still recovering from her wounds on Tuesday, sheriff's spokesman Jacki Tallman said. Veterinary staff are trying to find a foster home for Morgan.
