The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible animal cruelty case after deputies found a dead dog floating in a pond Thursday with a cinder block tied to the animal.

Maj. Gary Baker, a Sheriff's Office spokesman, said deputies responded at about 8 p.m. to North Lake Park after they received a call about a dog floating in Johnson Pond.

Once deputies arrived at the scene, they found the animal was chained to a cinder block, Baker said.

The fire department was called out there to helpwith the retrieval, and they had to remove some of the planks from the dock because the chain was so tangled.

The dog, believed to be a pit bull terrier, had no identification and had already begun to decay.

Linda Lugo, executive director for the Humane Society of Wicomico County, said the dog's body was released to the agency's animal control officers.

Because of the animal's advanced state of decomposition, Lugo said it is unlikely a necropsy -- an animal autopsy -- will be performed on the body.

Baker said investigators have theories on what might have happened.

"We think one of two things happened -- either somebody put the chain on the dog thinking it wouldn't move and it went into the pond itself, or somebody put it there," he said.

Lugo said she has heard of incidents where other pit bulls have suffered similar fates after losing in illegal dog fights.
