Horse neglect, one found dead Dacula, GA (US)Incident Date: Wednesday, Dec 31, 2003 County: Gwinnett
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Dolvin Monroe Thigpen
A man accused of neglecting to provide proper nutrition to three of his horses was indicted this week on animal cruelty charges.
Authorities said Dolvin Monroe Thigpen in January allowed his paint colt to die from malnutrition. Two others, a sorrel filly and a paint filly, were allegedly found emaciated on a 30-acre property that Thigpen was renting in Dacula.
Testing revealed the dead horse died due to infections from starvation and dehydration, according to an arrest warrant. Thigpen said the dead horse was being treated for colic and the others were not neglected, though some were smaller than others.
Ten horses belonging to Thigpen, including the two malnourished ones, were impounded by Gwinnett County Animal Control and were being cared for by a private individual. Thigpen in February said he planned to fight to get the horses back.
He's charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals and two counts of cruelty to animals.
