Ohio couple is facing animal cruelty charges after they allegedly ran down Tigger, a 12-pound Pomeranian puppy, on May 12, 2004. Tigger was outside his home when his 6-year-old "owner" and other witnesses watched as the dog was hit three times by the same car. Police and prosecutors believe that the driver and passenger of the car switched seats and repeatedly ran down Tigger in the street. Barry Shelott and Cassie Warsing, the alleged drivers of the vehicle that killed Tigger, have pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges as a result of this incident, and their trial begins on June 29, 2004. But because animal cruelty is still only a misdemeanor on the first offense, even if they are convicted, they face, at most, a 3-month jail sentence and a fine.

Case Updates

The Star Beacon (8/25) reports that a judge has given the maximum sentence allowable to the Ashtabula. As part of their sentence, Barry Shellot and Cassie Warsing must pay a $750.00 fine each and restitution to Tigger's owners, serve a 90-day jail sentence (with 60 days suspended), undergo pyschological evaluation and treatment and perform community service. Ashtabula City Solicitor Tom Simon reported receiving "pounds" of mail on the subject, including many letters from as far away as Singapore and Australia.

Judge Albert Camplese discussed the sentencing, stating that there are two options for jail sentencing. These options include 90 days in jail with 60 suspended or 90 days of electronically monitored house arrest.

Cassie Warsing, 24, of 81 Can Epps Ave. and Barry Shelott, 42, of 917 Bunker Hill Road were found guilty on a charge of injuring an animal after running over the puppy three times May 12, 2004. They must now pay a fine of $750 each and undergo psychological evaluation before jail sentencing can be determined.
