Riverside police get a tip about the murder of a dog.  Authorities say a family apparently had too many animals. Police say the parents allegedly told their teenage children to "take care"of two of the dogs.

The juveniles then reportedly rounded up a group of friends, took the animals into some storm tunnels underneath Woodman Drive near Burkhardt.

There, police say, it appears they kicked, stabbed, and finally drowned one of the animals the other dog somehow got away. Riverside Officer Jeff Wightman says this case is one of the most cruel animal abuse cases he has been on.

Police turned the case over to the Humane Society but say they will also assist with the investigation. Authorities ask if you have any information about the incident to call the Humane Society of Greater Dayton

Case Updates

A 13-year-old boy admitted responsibility in Montgomery County Juvenile Court on Friday to killing his family's dog.

The boy's parents described him as a "straight-A" student who did so well he skipped a grade in school last fall.

The boy told Magistrate William C. Cox of Montgomery County Juvenile Court that he and a 14-year-old friend intended to set the dog free, and they invited some school friends to watch.

But the dog followed him through a sewer he traversed with his friends.

"It followed me, and I didn't want it to follow me home, so we decided to kill it," the boy said, swallowing hard between each sentence.

The attack, in which the dog was stabbed and drowned, outraged Dayton and state Humane Society officials, who called it "vicious and deliberate."

The boy's parents, who are not being identified to protect the boy's identity, said it was the first time they had heard him admit to killing their pet.

They said they raised their four children with many pets, including the mother and grandmother of the dog who was killed.

After their son was arrested Thursday by Riverside police, the parents said a humane officer came to their home and removed all of their pets, including two other dogs, a cat, four ferrets, two turtles and a snake.

She said she dropped her son off with two of the dogs at one of his friend's homes on Tuesday, believing he would be taking the dogs for a walk. At the hearing, the boy did not explain why he intended to set the dog free.

"It's bad enough that our son did it, but it was one of our dogs. We care a lot about animals," the boy's father said.

Judge Michael B. Murphy also ordered a 14-year-old co-defendant released to his parents on electronic house arrest. The 13-year-old also was being prepared for release to his parents.

Both boys are scheduled to appear again in front of Murphy on June 15.

Both are charged with delinquency by reason of prohibited acts against a companion animal, a first-degree misdemeanor when applied to adults.

As juveniles, they could be placed in a local treatment center for up to 30 days.

Both boys are scheduled for psychological assessments before they return to court.
