A dog and puppy were found scratching and barking inside a rental storage unit without adequate food and water, authorities said.

The dogs were discovered Sunday caged in a 3- by 4-foot area at a storage unit that wasn't air conditioned or ventilated by someone who heard strange noises while he was checking his own unit.

Dana Naquin of Rutherford County Animal Control said it was a severe case of animal cruelty against the two mixed-breed dogs, one no older than 10 weeks.

"They were hungry and thirsty, but they looked in good shape," Naquin said.

A representative of the storage company said a man from Danville, Ill., had rented the unit at Ideal Mini-Storage three weeks ago.

Murfreesboro Police Officer Justin Lemanski said he thought the dogs had been in the unit for some time based on the excrement there.

The unit was nearly completely filled with furniture, electrical appliances and wilting plants, authorities said. No arrests have been made and authorities are continuing to investigate.
