More than 200 people hauled away from an illegal dog- and cock-fighting ring in Barrow County are facing charges Monday.

A full-size bus from the Georgia Department of Corrections hauled the suspects away from a home at 1055 Hancock Bridge Road last Sunday. Authorities say people would often gather at the home every week -- bringing their own animals with them -- to watch and bet on the torturous bouts.

The raid ended an 8-month effort led by the Barrow County Sheriffs Department, with support from the FBI, GBI, INS and Barrow County Animal Control among others.

Officers searching the home said they found dozens of dead and alive dogs and chickens that were made to fight to the death for gambling purposes.

"Weve got numerous chickens, fighting chickens, dead and alive, and weve got pit bulls in cages at this time," Chief Deputy Sheriff Kogod said.

The more than 200 suspects were charged with animal cruelty and illegal gambling.

Case Updates

More than 200 people were due in court Tuesday June 8, 2004 on charges related to a cockfighting bust that yielded the largest mass arrest in Georgia history.

Authorities say violent cockfights and pit bull fights were held at the eleven-acre property in Barrow County on most Sundays. The April 18, 2004 raid came after an eight-month investigation.

Authorities arrested 236 people on misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and gambling.

Only 200 of them showed up in court Tuesday morning. Most pleaded guilty to the charges and were fined about 700 dollars. Those who did not appear will have warrants issued for their arrests.

Officers rescued more than 100 chickens but found several others dead around the property. Authorities believe pit bulls also were fought on the property but none were found during the bust.

They also seized $136,000 along with 93 automobiles.
