A 36-year-old Jacksonville man arrested in February for operating a filthy puppy mill in St. Johns County accepted a plea bargain last week of three years of probation.

Circuit Court Judge Robert Mathis ordered that Jack Ramon Boyd Jr. do 200 hours of community service and to own no domestic animals or livestock.

Boyd was charged with two counts of animal cruelty and one count of confinement of animals without sufficient food, water or exercise after St. Johns County Sheriff's deputies, humane society workers and animal control officers found Boyd allegedly operating a puppy mill in the woods off Deerwood Lane.

Boyd pleaded no contest to the two third-degree felony counts and one first-degree misdemeanor count, which could have brought him five years in prison if he hadn't accepted the plea deal.

Just before a court hearing in early April, Walker's then-attorney, Sharon Poole, and Boyd's then-attorney, Richard Kuritz, reached a settlement allowing the 44 dogs to be turned over to the St. Augustine Humane Society, where they could be adopted.

During the puppy mill raid, deputies found a poodle with an apparently untreated, fractured front leg, hookworms and severe dental calculus. They also found a Lhasa Apso with open sores all over its body.

Boyd had crammed dogs of all sizes and breeds into a dozen cages, and kept them in filthy, unheated conditions in 30-degree weather, according to Sheriff's Office reports. The animals reportedly had green slime in their water and feces in their cages. Many dogs were pregnant or had recently delivered litters of pups.
