Puppy Mill - 62 dogs seized Columbus, OH (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Jan 15, 2004 County: Franklin
Disposition: Not Charged
Person of Interest: Bonnie L. Stonerock
Dozens of dogs have been seized from a local home that Humane Society workers called feces-filled and flea-infested.
The 62 rescued dogs -- some as young as 7 weeks old -- were at the Capital Area Humane Society Thursday night, where employees say the dogs were covered with fleas and sores when they were found. NewsChannel 4 reported that the dogs were receiving medical attention Thursday night.
The Chihuahuas, poodles and terriers were taken from a near-south-side home on Loxley Drive. A sign in front of the house read, "Pups for sale," but Dan Knapp, of the Capital Area Humane Society, doesn't believe that.
"With 62 dogs in 80 square feet, she wasn't selling them," he said.
Knapp said the woman who lives in the home -- Bonnie Stonerock -- claims to be a dog breeder. Authorities were alerted to the conditions inside the home by someone who visited the home to buy a dog.
"It was horrific," Knapp said. "There was about an inch of feces throughout the house, the urine had soaked into the carpet, and wood was coming up."
Knapp said some of the dogs have not been socialized, and although they are small dogs, they are dangerous. The dogs will spend the next few months at the shelter until the case is settled.
Stonerock has not been charged, but Knapp said she could face multiple charges of animal neglect and cruelty. References« OH State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Franklin County, OH
