A 35-year-old man faces animal cruelty charges after Memphis police and animal control officers on Wednesday found one dead pit bull and another near death at a home near Pendleton and Frisco in the Charjean area.

Police charged Mario Stewart, of Memphis, with aggravated cruelty to animals and cruelty to animals. Stewart was held in Shelby County Jail on $12,500 bond.

Stewart admitted to police that one of his pit bulls was involved in a dog fight. Officers found one dog dead of starvation chained to a fence and another malnourished and severely underweight in the backyard of 2735 Lola, according to a court affidavit.

Stewart told police he fed the dogs, didn't know how one starved and could not afford to provide the animals with shelter.
