Animal cruelty charges are pending against the owner of a Camp Hill animal rescue shelter after investigators removed more than 100 animals, according to the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area.
1 Life Animal Rescue was closed late last week, said Kelly Hitz of the Humane Society, when investigators found that the animals were being kept in foul living conditions.
Hitz told CBS 21 News that the owner willingly gave over the animals, which include cats, dogs and birds.
"Places like this do exist," Hitz said. "A lot of times there's people who just get overwhelmed. They set out trying to help animals and it just becomes too much."
The animals had a host of serious medical conditions, Hitz said, including calici, distemper, upper respiratory infections, toxidia, open wounds, infected eyes, parasites and fleas.
"Of the hundred animals, some did have to euthanized. They were simply too sick to humanely keep alive. And they also had diseases that were very dangerous for the other cats and dogs around them."
The animals have been relocated to other animal welfare organizations, according to Hitz. Others are undergoing treatment at the HSHA in Swatara Township, Dauphin County. References |
