Dog-fighting - two dogs seized Conyers, GA (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Oct 14, 2010 County: Rockdale
Charges: Felony CTA Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Ladell Antwine Dobbins
Police arrested a man late last week on a charge of animal cruelty after receiving neighbor complaints of dogfighting.
Ladell Antwine Dobbins, 29, of Stone Mountain faces cruelty to animals charge after his arrest Thursday.
Sgt. Guy Sanders with the Conyers Police Department said the CPD received an anonymous tip that dogfighting was taking place at 1252 Pinedale Circle at the time of the call.
Officers went to the residence shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday and asked if there was any dogfighting going on. According to Sanders, the person who answered the door motioned to the back of the house where authorities witnessed two pit bulls fighting.
"The officer saw a black pit bull being held down by a white pit bull," Sanders said.
Police reports described the white pit bull gnawing on the other dog's throat and causing heavy bleeding.
Dobbins was reportedly standing about 3 to 5 feet away from the fight, watching and making no attempt to separate the animals. Dobbins was later seen grabbing the white pit bull by the neck and taking him off the other dog.
It has not been determined if gambling was taking place or if anyone else was involved, according to Sanders.
According to the police reports, witnesses submitted video recordings of dogfights with Dobbins watching with his hands on his knees. Dobbins told officers he was trying to break the dogs up in the Thursday fight, the reports said.
Dogfighting is not a common occurrence, according to Sanders.
"It happens infrequently," Sanders said. "We hear that it happens. It's catching it that's an issue."
The black dog was taken to Rockdale Animal Control and later died.
Dobbins was released on bond the day after his arrest. His next court date was undetermined.
According to Georgia law, dogfighting is a felony offense, punishable by a $5,000 fine and/or one to five years in prison. References |
