A Boca Square resident has been ordered to appear in court July 31 to face a charge of animal abuse. A police report accuses Randall H. Reed, 36, of 956 N.W. Seventh Ave., Boca Raton, with leaving his dog outside in the hot sun with insufficient water, food and shelter. The incident occurred July 8.

The dog was removed to the Tri-County Humane Society shelter, the report said. "The dog had to be physically picked up and taken to the vehicle for transportation to Tri-County," the report says. "It appeared the dog was suffering from heat exhaustion."

According to reports, the July 8 incident was the third involving Reed and his dog in less than a week. On July 4, police said, an animal control officer went to the Reed home and told the dogs owner to remove a choker collar and lengthen the dogs leash.

Three days later, the report said, a neighbor called police about 12:30 p.m. and said the dog was outside on a leash on a hot day. An officer who responded said the plastic water bowl was overturned. He filled it and gave it to the dog.

The next day, the dog was removed and is being held at Tri-County pending resolution of the abuse complaint. The officer said a six-foot fence that "does not permit the dog to feel a breeze" surrounds the yard. Also, an igloo-style plastic doghouse "does not provide proper ventilation for the inside to remain cool."

The dog has been treated at Tri-County and is in good condition.
