Two armed intruders who tried to break into a Mesa man's apartment shot him in the arm and killed his dog, police said Monday.
The occupants of the apartment fired back, possibly wounding one of the assailants.
Police were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 600 block of South Alma School Road about 10 p.m. Sunday after reports of gunfire, around 10 p.m.
The victim, whose name was not released, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police said the two men tried to force their way into the victim's apartment, but were attacked by his pit bull. The gunmen shot and killed the dog, and then exchanged gunfire with the men in the apartment. The two assailants fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Trailblazer, authorities said.
A short time later, a man matching the description of one of the assailants asked for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.
None of the wounds was considered life-threatening.
