A Myrtle Beach woman, charged with animal abuse in July 2009 after Horry County officers found two dogs dead in a crate, will face a judge on January 26, 2010.

According to Horry County Solicitor, Ellyn J. Johnson, 33, will have a bench trial Jan. 26, 2010, at the Horry County Conway Magistrate Court, 1201 Third Ave. Johnson was charged July 22, 2009 with "ill treatment of animals, in general, torture."

Horry County Police were called to a home in the 100 block of Partridgeberry Road on July 20, 2009, after someone reported finding the two animals.

A witness told officers he was preparing the home for a foreclosure sale and found a tarp covering a crate in the back yard. Inside were two dead dogs, one of which was wearing a choke collar.

Neighbors told investigators that one of the owners was serving in Iraq, and they had only seen his wife, Johnson, at the residence a couple of times in the previous four months.

Officers located Johnson, and arrested her.

Then on January 27, 2010 a foul odor was detected in an apartment at 113 River Brook Court Unit 2 Myrtle Beach by the owner/landlord of the complex.

Johnson was living at the apartment on 113 River Brook Court.

The owner of the apartment contacted Horry County Police and Environmental Services and the Criminal Investigations Division began an investigation.

During the search, one deceased bulldog and one malnourished cat were found. Johnson is charged with ill treatment of animals, 2nd offense.

Ellyn Johnson remains in jail at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
