A 28-year-old New Orleans police officer has been arrested on animal cruelty charges after a dead dog and a malnourished one were found at her home in LaPlace.
St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Lt. Andy Breaux says Officer Nikia Adams contacted the parish's animal shelter this week to say that her dog had died in her backyard and asked that the animal be picked up. Breaux says when a representative from the shelter arrived, she found the dead animal to be malnourished and found another dog to be malnourished as well.
Breaux says the shelter employee was advised to return to Adams' home with deputies and seize the second animal for its protection. The 10-year police veteran was then booked on charges of aggravated cruelty to an animal, a felony, and misdemeanor animal cruelty for the one found alive. She is free after posting $4,500 bond.
New Orleans police had no immediate comment.
Case UpdatesNew Orleans Police Department leaders fired Officer Nikia Adams Wednesday.
Superintendent Chief Serpas said the officer pleaded no contest to charges in court, and was thus unfit to serve as a police officer.
Adams was arrested in January on animal cruelty charges, after she called the St. John animal shelter to say that her dog had died in her backyard and asked for help in removing the animal. When a member of the animal shelter arrived, she found the dead dog and another dog to be malnourished. According to a veterinarian who investigated the case, the dead dog weighed only 23 pounds " less than half of the weight the veterinarian said that it should have been.
Adams, a 10-year veteran of the force who was assigned to the Fourth District, pleaded in St. John Parish no contest to the two counts of simple cruelty to animals. | Source: wwltv.com - Oct 27, 2010 Update posted on Oct 29, 2010 - 11:24PM |
