A couple in the Town of Sharon were charged with animal cruelty after police investigated an alleged puppy mill at the couple's home.

Douglas Varin and Alison Hayes of Rosenberg Road were arrested for animal cruelty, unlawful growing of cannabis and endangering the welfare of a child.

Troopers and veterinarians searched the couple's property on July 29 following a two-week investigation, where they found 47 dogs. The Montgomery County SPCA took three adult dogs and eight puppies to their Amsterdam facility.

Troopers also seized four marijuana plants, prompting the Schoharie County Child Protective Services to evaluate the home that the couple shared with an 11-year-old child.
