A 57-year-old man is in trouble after he reportedly slammed a neighbor's dog into the ground repeatedly because it was barking. "The man took him, took him by the leash like this and hit him on the ground," says Michael Snyder, the dog's owner.
Snyder, tells investigators Cleavenger knocked on her door, upset that the dog was barking. The dog was tethered to the Snyder's back porch. Snyder's wife then watched as the dog is reportedly slammed to the ground. "He was throwing up blood and yellow stuff."
The rat terrier was euthanized; the Nebraska Humane Society vet said the dog had a "large amount of internal bleeding" from the beating.
The suspect is Kevin Cleavenger of 7520 Howard Street. He tells Action 3 News he did not hurt the neighbor's dog. "The old man's lying, because I didn't slam it towards the ground like he said I did and he's making me out to be a crazy man," said Cleavenger. The suspect admits the dog's barking had been bothering him for six months, but says he didn't even touch the dog.
Cleavenger is cited for animal cruelty.
Case UpdatesAn Omaha man was arrested and booked Tuesday for felony animal cruelty for his attack on a barking dog last month.
Fifty-seven-year-old Kevin Cleavenger allegedly slammed the rat terrier named Pompoo on the sidewalk outside his apartment building at 75th and Howard streets on April 20th.
He had knocked on the apartment door of Pompoo's owners to ask her to do something about the barking dog. Catalina Snyder told police that after refusing to answer the door, she heard her dog yelping and saw Cleavenger repeatedly slamming Pompoo to the ground.
Catalina and husband Michael decided to have their pet euthanized after talking with doctors who said the dog was suffering from internal bleeding and distress.
Cleavenger was originally cited for misdemeanor animal cruelty, but those charges were upgraded. | Source: WOWT - May 5, 2009 Update posted on May 5, 2009 - 4:16PM |
