A 59-year-old man was charged Wednesday with stomping a puppy to death in a moment of anger, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
Four days after family members reported the incident, two Cherokee deputies caught up with George Swanson, Sr., of Canton, Ga., as he drove on Univeter Road Wednesday. Authorities said his vehicle matched the description of the suspect's vehicle.
Swanson is charged with cruelty to animals, simple assault and cruelty to children in the second degree. He is being held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center on a $3,150 bond.
Swanson's daughter, Nicole McNemar, turned him in.
Swanson, last Friday, took his two grandchildren -- Mcnemar's sons -- to buy them a puppy. He bought two; one for the boys and another for himself.
McNemar said her father lost control after a dispute with his ex-wife, who is living with McNemar at her Canton, Ga., home. He then brutalized the puppy, killing the pet in front of his grandson.
"He picked up the puppy and shook it, and then he slammed it on the ground and then he started stomping on it," she said.
"As long as a child is witnessing a violent act, or a criminal act and that could leave psychological, physical or permanent damage to the child, you are able to charge them with cruelty to children," said Cherokee Spokeswoman Nicole Ebbeskotte.
McNemar said, "I just told [my 4-year-old son] that what his grandfather did was wrong and that he was going to jail because what he did was bad." Case UpdatesSwanson was charged with cruelty to animals, cruelty to children and terroristic threats. He pled guilty and was sentenced to 5 years probation, a $1250 fine and he is prohibited from owning domestic animals during that time. | Update posted on Jun 24, 2005 - 8:55PM |
