69 rabbits abandoned in home after tenant leaves
Wheaton, IL (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Dec 17, 2008
County: Du Page

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

Animal control officials in suburban Wheaton, Illinois say they were called to a small, one bedroom apartment there to rescue 69 Dutch rabbits.

The animals were left in the apartment by the last tenant, who'd just moved out.

Officials tracked her down and she admitted to leaving the rabbits.

The woman tells police she was "overwhelmed" by her finances.

A local animal shelter is now taking care of the rabbits, which they say are all in good health except one.

Shelter managers say it looks like a classic animal hoarding case. Police are not talking about possible charges and have not identified the woman by name.
