Dog choked with leash, beaten with baseball bat
Reidsville, NC (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Nov 28, 2008
County: Rockingham

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Joseph Wesley Sharpe

A 47-year-old man faces a felony charge after a Rockingham County sheriff's deputy found a dog that had been choked and beaten last month.

The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office responded to N.C. 150 at Patriot Lane on Friday to investigate a report of animal abuse. Deputy Jon Peters found a black dog tied up near the wood line. The dog was choking because of a slip knot tied into the rope.

The sheriff's office also said the dog had been hit in the head with a metal baseball bat.

The sheriff's office did not identify the breed of dog, but described it as a "black lab type dog." A local veterinarian treated the dog, who is expected to live.

Joseph Wesley Sharpe, of 581 N.C. 150, was later charged with one felony count of cruelty to an animal. His bond was set at $2,000. The sheriff's office said the dog belonged to Sharpe's daughter.

At 4:14 p.m. Friday, Deputy Peters responded to a 911 call of animal abuse. He was met by a child's screams.
